A Historic Ship from Lithuania Invites Europeans to Eurobasket‘2011

The yacht of Lithuanian sailors Gold of Lithuania sailing around the Mediterranean Sea will encourage Spanish and French basketball fans to follow actively the upcoming European basketball championship. Eurobasket‘2011 is starting on the 31st of August and will continue for three weeks; this festive event is hosted by Lithuania for the first time since the country’s independence in 2011.

A historic-reconstructive expedition Gold of Lithuania that takes place for the third consecutive year will link Lithuania with the South of France, Monaco, the southern coast of Spain and North Africa this year. In 21 ports of these countries, sailors will raise a symbolic 40 sq. metres flag of Lithuania inviting to strengthen diplomatic, business and cultural relations.

“This year is special for Lithuania, as we have the honour to host the European basketball championship for the first time. Our sailors are sending their warmest wishes to all cities and are inviting their people to come to Lithuania and to visit Vilnius that has been famous for its wonderful cultural events for many years,” states Artūras Zuokas, the Mayor of Vilnius, in his letter to the municipalities of the cities to be visited by the expedition.

“Our goal is not only to promote basketball, sailing or patriotism, but also to popularise the idea of business pilgrimage at the same time,” says Donatas Juškus, the captain of Gold of Lithuania. According to him, the members of the expedition are going to meet the representatives of self-governance of the ports they will be visiting, they will visit the oldest Jesuit universities, will communicate with local communities and business organisations, will discuss opportunities for cooperation in the areas of business, education and culture. As Donatas Juškus says, the diverse crew of Gold of Lithuania consists from about 40 persons including the representatives of manufacturing and service businesses, lawyers, economists, journalists and artist.

Gold of Lithuania is the initiative that was started in 2009 by the public organization JCI Vilnius and Vilnius City aiming at development of communication between the cities, promotion of business and tourism. The mission of the historical-reconstructive voyage is to repeat the route of pilgrimage voyage to the Holy Land held in 1583-1584 by Nicholas Christopher Radziwill the Orphan, the nobleman of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, who became known in the history of the world as a traveller, geographer, map maker and philanthropist.

While travelling along the historic route in 2009-2010, Gold of Lithuania raised a huge 40 sq. metres flag in more than 40 major ports of the Mediterranean Sea, including Dubrovnik (Croatia), Athens (Greece), Heraklion (Crete), Rome (Italy), Valletta (Malta) Ajaccio (Corsica), Palermo (Sicily), Larnaca (Cyprus), Alanya (Turkey), Tel-Aviv (Israel) and Alexandria (Egypt). The Lithuanians handed official invitations of the Mayor of Vilnius to the mayors of all visited cities to visit the capital of Lithuania and expressed willingness to further develop partnership relations.

This year’s expeditions will be distinguished by the fact that the crew of Gold of Lithuania will sail the first model of the historic classic ship Reliant’59 built in Lithuania.

Gold of Lithuania will moor in accordance with the following time-table. Everybody interested and the media are welcome!

“GOLD OF LITHUANIA” is the first yachting expedition in Lithuanian history that reconstructs the pilgrim journey of Mikołaj Krzysztof Radziwiłł (The Orphan), a nobleman of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, to the Holy Land in 1583-1584.

The journey “GOLD OF LITHUANIA” of 2010 is dedicated to both the 20th anniversary of the Lithuania’s Independence and Vilnius City striving to enhance its cooperation with the ports of the Mediterranean Sea. During this journey, the Lithuanian yachtsmen faced the challenge of sailing around the Mediterranean Sea and communicating the key facts about Lithuania to the countries and cities of this area, promoting business pilgrimage as well as diplomatic, cultural and economic relations.

Last year, LITHUANIA celebrated its millennium. In 2010, it commemorates the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald and the 20th anniversary of its Independence Restoration.

LITHUANIA develops innovation-based economy and by way of BUSINESS PILGRIMAGE attracts investment, and restores or enhances economic partnerships with the Mediterranean countries.

LITHUANIAN CAPITAL VILNIUS is a modern city open for tourism, culture and business.

“GOLD OF LITHUANIA” HISTORICAL RECONSTRUCTION

“I propose to take 1583-1584 route of M.K.Radvila Našlaitėlis’ (the Orphan) (he was best known for ordering the first accurate map of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) in 1613) journey to the Holy Land.

This historical figure is important in a deeper perspective, too. In 1586, right upon returning from this journey, he funded early baroque Jesuit Church of Nesvyžius built imitating Il Gesù of Rome consecrated in 1583.

This fact testifies that the cultural phenomena of Western Europe reached Lithuania and the GDL without delay. Thus, the fact may be deeply conceptualised envisaging in it Lithuania’s becoming a genuinely integral part of Europe as early as in the 16th c.”
